Wix, Squarespace, or something built from scratch? It is one of the first decisions a business makes online, and the wrong choice can hold you back for years. Here is the honest comparison.

The website builders: Wix and Squarespace

Builders like Wix and Squarespace let you put a site together yourself from templates, with no code. Their appeal is obvious.

    • Cheap to start, often just a monthly fee.
    • You can do it yourself, no developer needed.
    • Quick to get something live.

For a brand new business testing an idea on a tight budget, that can be enough to begin with.

    Where builders hold you back

The trade offs show up as you grow.

    • Templated. Your site looks like thousands of others, because it is the same template.
    • Slower. Builders carry a lot of weight under the hood, which can hurt speed and rankings.
    • Limited SEO and control. You can only do what the platform allows.
    • Lock in. Your site lives on their platform. Leave, and you usually cannot take it with you.

    The custom built website

A bespoke website is built around your business rather than squeezed into a template. It costs more effort to create, but you get real advantages.

    • A design that looks like you, not everyone else.
    • Fast, because it is built lean and properly.
    • Full control over SEO, structure and features.
    • It is yours. No platform lock in, no hostage fees.

    So which should you choose?

    A rough rule of thumb:

    • Just testing an idea, no budget, happy to DIY? A builder gets you online.
    • Serious about growth, want to rank, and want a site that looks like a real business? Custom wins, and it pays for itself in enquiries.

The old catch was the upfront cost of custom. We removed it: we build bespoke sites with nothing to pay up front, on a monthly basis, so you get the custom result without the big bill. More on that in how much a website costs.

Builders are fine for getting started. If you are building a business you want found and trusted, a custom site you actually own is the better investment.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Wix or Squarespace good enough for a business website?

For testing an idea on a tight budget, yes. But they are templated, slower, limited on SEO, and lock you into their platform, which holds you back as you grow.

Is a custom website worth it over a builder?

If you are serious about being found and trusted, yes. A custom site is faster, looks like you, gives full SEO control, and is yours to keep. It usually pays for itself in extra enquiries.

Can I move my Wix or Squarespace site somewhere else?

Generally not. Builder sites live on their platform and cannot be exported and rehosted, so leaving usually means rebuilding. A custom site avoids that lock in.

    Are custom websites more expensive?

They cost more to build, but Juno builds them on a monthly basis with nothing to pay up front, so you get the custom result without a large one off bill.
